Does Acne Medicine provide the best Acne Treatment?

There are so many different acne treatments on the market that it can become somewhat confusing for the average person. Should you use a topical acne medicine or some sort of acne medication in a pill form?

Is there any one medication that can truly be called the "best acne treatment" or does each treatment have its own pros and cons?

Acne Prevention

In sports, people often say that "the best offense is a good defense". When it comes to the best acne treatment this is also sometimes the case.

There are many different lifestyle choices that you can make that will make it easier to avoid acne in the first place. While this might not be the best acne treatment for everyone, it may be able to help some people avoid needing any sort of acne medication in the first place. Acne prevention involves following a few simple rules:

• Wash your face frequently, especially after working out.
• Never wear makeup to bed.
• Always wash your towels and pillows regularly.
• Use hair gel and hairspray only sparingly, if at all.
• Keep your hair out of your face. It contains oils that can cause acne.

Benzoyl Peroxide Acne Medication

This is a standard acne medicine that is used all over the world and is an active ingredient in many of the best acne treatments. It is applied as a topical cream to effected areas. It generally provides very quick but slight relief over a course of a few days and then works progressively to get rid of acne over a course of one to two months. Not everyone finds benzoyl peroxide to be effective, but many have reported success with this acne medicine. The only drawback is that it sometimes will cause dryness or redness in some people's skin if used in concentrations that are too high.

Other Topical Treatments

There are also a few other acne medications that are available as creams including sulfur creams and antibiotic creams. Sulfur has effects similar to benzoyl peroxide, although far less strong. This makes it safe to use even if you have very sensitive skin. Antibiotic creams on the other hand directly kill the bacteria which cause acne. The only reason however that this is not the best acne treatment is that acne can become resistant to it over time. Antibiotics can also be taken in a pill form.

Hormone Treatments

In women, female hormones can also be used as an effective acne medication. The hormones estrogen and progestogen are the two that are used. This treatment usually doubles up as a form of birth control and is taken orally. This type of acne medicine will require a prescription.
