It is believed that there are strong ties between diet and acne. However, there is still no consensus as to which foods contribute to an acne diet. However, many people who have fought and defeated acne in the past have argued that changing your diet can be an effective acne treatment and have written about their trails with different foods. As an acne home treatment, this is much safer and cheaper than prescription or over-the-counter medications. Below are a few of the foods that you should worry about when forming your acne diet:
Fats
A diet that is too high in fats could be damaging to your acne diet because it makes your body more able to secrete the types of oils which clog up the pores of the skin on the face, neck, and upper back. As an acne home treatment, you should try to cut fats out of your diet whenever possible, especially saturated fats and trans-fats. Doing this will not only reduce your acne, but also improve your general health.
Carbohydrates
You need to have a certain amount of carbohydrates in your diet, but most people actually get too much. Hence, it is best to cut back on them. The easiest way to do this is eliminate your sugar intake as much as possible by not drinking soda. Improving your ratio of carbohydrates to protein can be an effective acne treatment and can be partially accomplished by switching from white bread to whole grain bread and pasta.
Vitamins and minerals can make fine additions to an acne home treatment Proteins
A good acne diet will contain a greater amount of proteins that the standard American diet enjoyed by most teenagers and young adults.
Vitamins, Minerals, and other Supplements
There are a few vitamins and minerals that make fine additions to an acne home treatment. These include Vitamin A, Zinc, fish oil, and tea tree oil.
Green Tea
There is some anecdotal evidence that suggests that green tea consumption could act as a mild suppressant of acne outbreaks because of its very high antioxidant levels. This could also explain the persistence of tea tree oil as an effective acne treatment.
Iodine
Iodine, when taken in in very large quantities, can act as an irritant and cause existing acne to become worse. The small amounts of iodine in fish are not a great danger since they are not too large. However, if you consume a large amount of artificially iodized salt, this could inflame your acne. Try not to eat prepackaged salted foods. When you are at home, use non-iodized salt.
Chocolate
It was once thought that consumption of chocolate was a major cause of acne. However, this belief is now given very little credence in most circles. Most likely, chocolate consumption is only a problem when it is consumed with heavy amounts of sugar.
Whole Grains
Some nutritionists now recommend switching completely onto only whole grains in order to fight acne. Not only is this an acne home treatment, it is also good for your general health as well.
While diet alone has not been proven to completely eradicate acne, it should be a major part of any effective acne treatment plan.
