Pros & Cons about common Acne Skin Care Products and Acne Creams

New acne treatment with a facial cleanser, a moisturizer, and a topical cream New acne treatment with a facial cleanser, a moisturizer, and a topical cream

There are a lot of popular and heavily promoted acne medications currently on the market. Almost everyone has heard of Proactive and Clearasil, and many more of us have seen recent online ads for products like Exposed and Revitol. While it is true that there is a wealth of options open to acne sufferers outside of these products, most of the big names operate using basically the same formula.

The standard package includes a facial cleanser, a moisturizer, and then a topical cream whose main active ingredient is almost always benzoyl peroxide or some variant of this. So when it comes to over the counter acne creams there is actually less variation than you might think, at least in terms of the ingredients.

However, some new acne treatments do include unusual ingredients such as tea tree oil and other natural substances, but whether or not these make a great difference in these acne skin care products is yet to be seen. But nevertheless, these new trends seem to be finding a following, which might indicate at least that there is initial evidence of their effectiveness.

When choosing acne skin care products compare the active ingredients. This is really the most important thing that you can do, as this will be your way of telling one product from the next. This will also spare you from buying basically the same acne cream several times under different brand names. This way, if you find that the main active ingredients in the major acne creams brands are not helping you, you can move onto more aggressive alternative treatments.

Alternatives

  • Antibiotics
In cases when benzoyl peroxide and similar topical creams do not help, sometimes a doctor will prescribe an antibiotic treatment. Because this kind of new acne treatment has more complex side effects, it is usually only prescribed after other topical creams do not work. Antibiotics can also be prescribed as a pill to be taken orally, but some patients complain that this gives them stomach pains.

  • Hormone treatments
Hormone treatment for acne is only possible in women, but it has a fairly high success rate. And since some hormone regimens can double as birth control, this is an easy and practical option for many women. But unlike general topical creams and brand name treatments, this will require a prescription from a doctor.

  • Laser treatments
Although this is one of the more expensive treatment options, many patients who have had a laser treatment for their acne have reported up to 100% of their acne going away after a few treatments. Even more encouraging is that these same patients have often never seen their acne come back after this point, suggesting that this may be a permanent cure in some cases. However, this is still a new acne treatment, meaning that its long term effectiveness still needs to be tested.

When choosing acne skincare products it is vital to consider which treatment provides best cure for your acne problem and is also most appropriate for your type of skin.
